Birth Wisdom: The Circle of Motherhood

Baby showers are such a blessing to new parents as they start to collect practical items that they will need in the coming months.  It’s so fun to gather together with other women to celebrate the upcoming birth of a new baby.  But baby showers often lack one critical component, and that’s helping new moms prepare for labor and postpartum.

Unless you have a close friend or relation who openly shares helpful tips for managing labor, many moms go into their first experience underprepared and wishing their hospital birth course had been more thorough.  Let’s face it, we’re not doing anyone any favors by avoiding talking about the messy bits that is birth and postpartum.  Women deserve to be better prepared and feel comfortable asking questions of the moms who have gone before them.

Baby showers are fun, but let’s also normalize sharing birth wisdom in an empowering way.  What if every expecting mom had an opportunity to be among seasoned mothers where they shared stories and offered helpful tips for coping with labor and recovering from childbirth, all in an effort to encourage and support her in this life altering passage into motherhood?  While it’s true that birth is a natural experience, mothers are much more capable of coping when they are prepared for the reality of what’s to come.

If you’re an expecting mom, don’t hesitate to ask other moms for helpful tips and what to expect. If you’re a seasoned mom, reach out to expecting moms and offer to answer any questions they might have. Let’s normalize empowering new moms as they go into their birth and postpartum experiences by sharing helpful tips and encouragement.  We’re all in this together; the circle of motherhood.
