Planning your Birth Team

Have you considered including a lactation professional in your birth team plan? Getting breastfeeding off to a great start isn’t always a top priority for a lot of hospitals and birth centers and many moms feel the lack of nursing support in the early days and can use some encouragement and support tailored to meet their specific needs.

What happens in labor and delivery has a big impact on how breastfeeding starts off and just like no one can predict their birth story, no one can predict what breastfeeding challenges might pop up in the first hours, days and weeks following delivery.

Sometimes the lactation help in the hospital is superb, and sometimes it’s nonexistent.  Do yourself a favor and connect with a lactation professional BEFORE birth so you can easily reach out for follow-up support AFTER birth. Having the contact information for breastfeeding support readily available will make it that much easier to reach out for help once baby is here. Additionally, building a relationship with a lactation professional during pregnancy can help you feel more comfortable reaching out in those early postpartum days and can greatly reduce the number of potential breastfeeding pitfalls you might face after birth.
